CombatHypertension@home

By a European consortium led by prof. Dr Angela Maas

About

CombatHypertension@home is a project proposal calling on the European Union to start a Home Blood pressure monitoring (HBPM) EU campaign to bring HPBM into women’s daily routine.

Impact

Home blood pressure monitoring (HBPM) has shown to be effective in lowering blood pressure and improving antihypertensive medication use. Through this campaign, women would be able to detect hypertension in a earlier stage, maximising their chances for a successful treatment.

Main deliverables

Detect hypertension in women early on

Prevent instead of more intensive medical treatments or intrusive procedures

More accurate data-collection for large scale research and individual diagnostics

Usage of modern eHealth applications makes feedback with physician more accessible and less time-consuming than visits to the outpatient clinic

Decreases adherence to medication.

Why necessary in society?

Hypertension is the major critically important risk factor in women affecting the majority after menopause. With ageing, blood pressure rises more steeply in women compared to men, leading to more vascular stiffness and heart failure at older age. Thirty to 50% of women develop hypertension before the age of 60. Nonetheless, hypertension is often poorly managed. Physicians’ inertia often seems to be responsible for poor blood pressure control. Although HBPM’s diagnostic ability was proven a decade ago, it is rarely used in practice for the initial diagnosis of hypertension.
