Impact

The toolkit delivers relevant interventions, materials and knowledge sources to healthcare professionals to ensure that the differences between men and women in health are recognised and that these are included in research, prevention, diagnosis and treatment. This improves the quality of healthcare, the quality of life of all sexes and genders, and reduces unnecessary healthcare costs.

Main deliverables

An established focal point for material and knowledge sources to update the knowledge and skills on specific topics or to assist clients

A glossary of terms providing an explanation of terms used

A toolkit providing practical information for healthcare and care providers to take into account diversity in sex, gender and sexual orientation

An impact map presenting very concrete examples cases in which gender and/or sexual orientation have been insufficiently or not taken into account in health care, showing which parties have to react in a correct manner as a result of these "incorrect" actions

Why necessary in society?

All people, with their different gender identifications and sexual orientations should be treated equally. However, sometimes treatment should be different in order to be appropriate. Especially in the doctor’s office, as these differences put some groups at higher risk of certain health problems than others. Therefore the Toolkit “Komt een Mens bij de Dokter” provides health care professionals with a toolkit to be sensitive and respond appropriately to the needs of patients with their own gender, sexual orientation and identification.
